Tesla V2L Reaches Australia: 3.45kW, Adapter Extra

From October 2026, new Australian Model 3 and Model Y cars can power a single appliance through a separate Tesla adapter, but the adapter costs extra, and full power needs a 15A outlet. The headline figure is 3.45kW only on a 15A plug; on a standard 10A outlet the same setup gives 2.3kW. For drivers who already own a car, or who want backup power without buying a particular new model, a standalone pure sine wave inverter remains the simpler route.

What changed in October

Tesla has extended vehicle-to-load, or V2L, across its Australian Model 3 and Model Y range for cars produced from October 2026, covering the MY27 cars now starting delivery. Before this change, only the six-seat Model Y L, delivered from May 2026, supported V2L in Australia. At a Sydney fleet event on 10 October 2026, Tesla Australia and New Zealand leadership confirmed the wider rollout and the demand behind it. As background only, the new Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive is listed at A$45,900 with a 572 km range, with deliveries from mid-to-late October 2026.

V2L means the car can supply power to one appliance at a time. It suits camping, worksites and single-point backup, but it is not whole-house power.

The adapter and its real numbers

The Tesla Outlet Adapter is sold separately at A$145 in Australia. It plugs directly into the car charging port, with an Australian power socket on the other end. That direct connection is different from the United States adapter, which connects through a Mobile Connector cable and is rated at up to 2.4kW at 120V.

Outlet type Maximum V2L output
15A plug 3.45kW
Standard 10A plug 2.3kW

At 15A, 3.45kW can run many single appliances, such as a camping fridge, a kettle, an induction cooktop or worksite power tools, one load at a time and within the nameplate limit of the appliance. At 10A, the 2.3kW ceiling is still useful for smaller loads, but it will not match the headline figure. Buyers should therefore check which outlet they will actually use before assuming the higher number.

Compatibility wording has also widened. Checked on 2 November 2026, the Tesla Australia adapter page lists all Model Y L cars plus all Model 3 and Model Y cars produced from October 2026, replacing earlier reporting that listed only the Model Y L. Tesla also notes that damage from third-party bidirectional adapters or chargers is not covered by its warranty.

What it is not

Australian V2L is not home backup, and it is not vehicle-to-grid. It powers a single appliance, not house wiring, and it does not export power to the grid. As of this check, Tesla has not announced V2H or V2G for Australian Model 3 and Model Y cars, so buyers should not plan a whole-home system around this feature in Australia.

Existing cars are also limited. An existing Model 3 cannot be retrofitted for V2L, and whether other existing vehicles could gain the feature through a software update remains unconfirmed. In short, this is a feature of cars produced from October 2026 onward, not an upgrade for the existing fleet.

For context only, V2L is already common on other brands in Australia: the Hyundai IONIQ 5 has offered up to 3.6kW since 2021 with an adapter included, Kia offers V2L across its range, and the 2026 XPeng G6 offers up to 6kW.

The separate-system alternative

A standalone inverter separates the power system from the car. Sunrise New Energy (Powsmart) REP pure sine wave inverters cover 300W to 6000W, so the unit is chosen by load rather than by car model. The battery is chosen separately, lead-acid or lithium, and the system can be fitted today to any house and used with any vehicle.

Honest sizing matters here. Tesla 3.45kW at 15A is above the 2000W tier and above a 3000W rated unit, so a driver who truly needs a single 3.45kW load should look at higher tiers, such as the 5000W pure sine wave inverter. For smaller loads, a 3000W pure sine wave inverter may be enough. See the full REP pure sine wave inverter series page.

For outage essentials, start with a fridge, lighting, internet equipment and a water pump. Add their running loads, allow headroom for start-up surges, and size for that list, not the whole house.

How to size yours

Step 1: List the real loads

Write down every appliance you must run at the same time, then read the nameplate on each one. Nameplate power is the reliable figure; do not guess from the size of the appliance.

Step 2: Match rated power, not peak power

Compare the total running load with the inverter rated power, not its peak figure. For example, a 3000W rated, 6000W peak unit can handle brief start-up surges up to its peak, but its continuous rating is 3000W. Leave headroom above the total running load for motors and compressors that surge on start-up.

Step 3: Size the battery for the job

Runtime depends on battery capacity and the load actually drawn. Choose the battery for the outage or camping time you need, and follow the inverter manual for wiring, fuses and ventilation.

Step 4: Choose pure sine wave for sensitive loads

Pure sine wave output suits laptops, chargers and motor-driven appliances better than modified sine wave output, because it more closely matches mains power.

FAQ

Does every Australian Tesla get V2L?

No. V2L applies to Model 3 and Model Y cars produced from October 2026, plus the earlier six-seat Model Y L. An existing Model 3 cannot be retrofitted, and a software upgrade for other existing cars remains unconfirmed.

Can Tesla V2L run my whole house?

No. In Australia it powers a single appliance through the adapter. It does not power house wiring, and Tesla has not announced V2H or V2G for Australian Model 3 and Model Y cars.

Will I get 3.45kW from any socket?

No. The 3.45kW figure requires a 15A plug. On a standard 10A outlet, the maximum is 2.3kW, so check the outlet before planning the load.

Does the adapter come with the car?

No. The Tesla Outlet Adapter is sold separately at A$145 in Australia, and it plugs directly into the charging port.

Do I need a Tesla to have backup power?

No. A standalone Sunrise New Energy inverter, sized from 300W to 6000W by load and paired with a suitable battery, works with any vehicle and any house, without waiting for a particular new car or adapter.
